Borders and Mapmaking

Hello guys. I was wondering if any experianced map makers could give me some tips on how to draw nice and accurate borders.

I find it very hard to memorize every creek and corner of a map/pic on lets say Google, then to draw it on the map maker.

Is there anyway to use a picture as overlay, then make the opacity 50% to draw the borders with ease?

Any tips would be appreciated.

I would imagine overlay the background image with the borders then trace those in the mapmaker? idk
