I've been asked this quite a bit recently by various players and decided to make a thread about it.
The best place to quickly improve your atwar skills is on the default map, specifically within the europe+ setting for 3k 5k and 10k. There players actively compete to optimise their win percentages vs each other in duels and teamgames(clan wars). You wont find a more diverse map or setting that'll teach you gameplay with all the strats across different settings. you can find a clan to help you along but ultimately its on you to try and improve. While not everybody enjoys them duels are the quickest way to do it.
Start by identifying players who are better than you and putting them on a "to-beat " list. Dont immediately aim for the top duelists, obviously ultimately you want to be able to beat them but for a while theyll be a bit out of your league(unless youre lucky like i was once vs tophats as a r8). Aim for players around your own rank and skill level and then work your way up the foodchain. Spectate games by good players, observe their gameplay and try to pick up as much as you can. Play them whenever you can. Yes you'll lose a lot but this is how you learn. I personally notched up a 2:1 loss to win ratio on duels initially. Youve got to lose to win, not just something we say to losers to make them feel better, it is how you learn.
You'll have more difficulty beating some players than others. As youre learning you'll pick up a style and some players styles will counter yours more than others. For me one of the hardest players to tick off my duel list was Eagles8539, i originally developed an agressive style and his countered that. I could gain advantages vs him in the early turns but if i was unable to finish him off he had a strong lategame and he would wear me down. I had to develope my own lategame ultimately to be able to beat him without lucky early aggression. Learning to beat players where they are strongest will help your gameplay become more well rounded. There are many different styles of players out there. Dont become predictable, dont learn off set expansions that you use for every game, dont become set in one style of gameplay. React to your opponents pick, then turn 2 react to their openings and strat choice. Once you're able to do this youll be strong on any map or setting.
Ancient world is also a decent place to improve if you prefer that map. Its not as diverse as default europe+ but theres a competitive community which duels there. Ferr and zone for example started there and they were significantly better players when they made the transition to the default than those who come from scenarios etc.
For those who dont like duels you can develope your game through teamgames only. I do find though that teamgame orientated players tend not to have strong lategames as its not a common situation on small maps. World games however are another great way to improve your lategame, and theyre quite fun if youve the time for them.
Ultimately though the game is for fun, so play what you enjoy whether it is competing, scenarios, rp whatever.
