RESOLVED: Transported units seem to add to battle

I attacked 9 battleships 10 subs and 10 transports ( also 160 troops ) in a stack with 31 submarines,

I killed 6 units (total) before the battle it showed my Att/Def to be higher, when the battle played out it made it 30 against 180 or something odd.

Prior to this 9 subs had attacked ( hoping to sink the odd transport and soldiers ) with 30 bombers - killed noone.

There is something not right about attacking stacks - it seems you win big or lose it all??

I still cannot follow chasing stacks either, sometimes you can attack others you dont move and they do????
