I see experienced players setting up defense lines in skinny wedge shapes around their cities so that there is no way to bypass the line, but when I do it I can't get a skinny wedge, I end up with a fat triangle with the back open to attack. Is there some way to choose which unit the unit you move forms a defence line with, or have I just not spent enough time messing around with it?

Well, first off you have to choose which way you want the wedge to face. I usually start by putting one infantry/militia directly in front on my city, facing the enemy. Then, I take another unit, and bring it to the opposite side of the city, and bring it as far away as I can before the the line doesn't show up. I do the same with another unit on the other side. I believe Pinheiro or one of them has a thread or pics on this...i'll try and dig it up.
