Hey.

Now, I consider myself quite a veteran, but I still don't understand the full mechanics behind turnblocking.

Consider the following, which happened to me. Numbers are from memory, so approximate, but how things happened are accurate, since I asked my opponent what he did and as far as I know he didn't lie to me.

So, I had about 180 helicopters in Madrid, and the enemy had around 240 bombers in Lisbon, Portugal. He has used a bomber to destroy my defence-line on the previous turn, but half of the defence line subsists, as shown on this picture (a re-enactment using myself alone).

Here, crucially, the remnants of my defence-line PREVENT him from going to Madrid in one move. On the next picture, I show in the red dotted line what his bombers did as movement to get into Madrid. I didn't assume this; I saw it on the Battle Phase screen, when the dotted lines appear. In blue is my movement, the helicopters, going to Portugal in one single click. I had infantry from the south of Spain attacking Lisbon too, to make sure I capped it.

(note that he was using bombers and an air transport. Which means he moved first his bombers, then his air transport. 2 seperate moves, and they both needed a way point before reaching Madrid, to go around my defence-line).

So, considering I have more than 50% of his strength (180/240 = 75%), that we both made it our first move, that I could move STRAIGHT to Lisbon, but that he had to stop on the way to Madrid to change course...

...why did he take Madrid and wipe out my 180 helicopters? At the very least, if I hadn't managed to turnblock his bombers, my helicopters should have reached Portugal and fought there, not stayed in Madrid, right?

I really don't understand this, Amok. And it does make learning the game very frustrated, because I thought I had understood. I'm not angry, I'm just trying understand the mechanics.

Thank you for your time.

[Resolved]. This has been cleared up. Apparently I didn't get the memo that the "changing direction" zig-zag move isn't worth 2 moves, but only 1.

Sucks.

Zig zag moves are counted as 1 move. You can try it, but in the battles phase the line will be straight no matter the obstacles in the way.

How is a zig zag move not counted as more than 1?

In the battle phase it's shown as 1 move only, I think I tested it once with Pinheiro or Hugosch, not sure.

That's horrible, it should count as more than one.

I always tried to avoid zig zagging to avoid turnblocks, guess it didn't matter.

I understand it shows as a straight line, but it should be counted as more than 1 move IMO.

It's shown and it's also counted as only one move also. I remember that TopHats was the first one to call my attention to that and, after a few tests, we reached the same conclusion: the only move that really matters is the final one you do with your troops.

Wow, this is all very interesting. I've always tried to avoid zigzags like Fruit. And I agree with Guest, these zigzags should count as more than one move.

Yes, one "movement" is determined by the final destination of your stack going from either a city to a city, or any other place on a map in which you engage the enemy. It doesn't matter how many little moves it takes you it's the attacking location that is counted as one movement.

Lol I thought I was the only one who zig-zagged to avoid turn blocks, they really should count as more than 1 move though. Just makes more sense.

In this case the first move started is your actual first move. That is just from my experience Im not 100% sure.

I agree that it should be one move unless you move it, then move another unit, then move the original unit

i think the reason it counts it as one move is that the code would be much cleaner if it just counts it's starting and ending position rather than every move it makes.

This is how it works

More enemy units=no turn block

oddly this still applies to transports

What? wow. So I want to get this straight. If I move one stack from a city, and zig zag around the map, and then choose another stack. Will my second stack be countes as my second move?
