As New York City found out in the late 90's, flooding the streets with more policemen does indeed significantly drop crime rates. Deterrence works. The best short-term measure to maintain order is more policemen. Guess who pays their salaries.

If you think more long-term, the two most effective ways of decreasing crime is economic stability and alleviation of poverty.

If the state is not around to testify that the patch of land, the factory building, or the city airport is indeed owned by who it's supposed to be owned by, how do you get the former? Without charity of the state, how do you get the latter?

This thing called "the state" is really quite effective at maintaining order and stability.

In a completely free society, by my definition, the system of incentives is so that acts beneficial to the society as a whole are also made proportionally beneficial to the person who performs it. I do not, unfortunately, live in a completely free society, but it is close enough to ensure that the State needs to perform public good if it expects to benefit.

Dissent, or dissatisfaction at the State, was a key feature in every single country I've been in.

Admittedly I've only been to a half dozen, but I've seen enough to tell that there are very many millions of people who aren't very happy at the way things run right now.

I intend to respect the laws of my State. I also intend to serve in the military as prescribed by law.

So I guess by your standards, I am a patriot also.

Living abroad for several years definitely taught me the cosmopolitan mindset, but in the end one can't escape one's own nationality.

You are correct. It is fully my intention to do so. I cannot really explain why without giving away what my home country is.

Suffice to say, among other reasons which I am not going into right now, the laws of my State mandates that I do. I would prefer that my State abolish conscription, but alas, the current political situation is not one in which demilitarization is likely to happen.

Unlike you, I realize that I am one of millions. Nobody is truly non-disposable. Come right down to it, not even the higher-ups that run this State.
So of course I have my preferences. But if everybody follows their own and refuse to compromise, then how does the State even work?
