European cars are way too expensive to purchase and maintain in the U.S. On styling, I would agree, but you cant beat the reliability of Toyota or Honda. My friend just purchased a used 1991 Toyota Camry. They last forever.

Lada Niva from 1980



It is expensive for my taste ($5000), but i am aware it is cheaper than counterparts from the same category. Good thing is it is still being produced, so there are spare parts available and cheap. So if we Lada drivers want to replace old model with the new one it won't be a problem. Though new Lada Niva is exactly the same.



Vehicle is durable, strong, pure iron, but inside it looks like a car from 1925. No modern gadgets and fancy stuff, kind of a redneck car.

I also have Chevrolet Lacetti from 2004, i wanted second car, sportlike since i already had Lada as a off-road jeep. It was $16,000. But it was worth it. Medium size, 1.6k engine, 90hp, starts like a Ferrari, sensitive brakes, mixture of sport and family car. American company, South Korean production and Italian design. It never failed me and always provided me comfort and fun. But registration is expensive as hell so i can't drive it anymore, as i am saving money for something else. Using Lada only while Lacetti is sitting in the backyard. Unfortunately, the Chevrolet has stopped Lacetti production and created new model, so i can never buy new model again, only try to find second-hand which are usually ruined and raped by previous owners.

It is Soviet, not Russian. It is made in 1970s and 80s, Russia didn't exist in that time. There are 3 reasons Soviet (and new Russian) vehicles are cheaper than German counterparts: availability of resources, different goal (longevity over luxury) and affordability for the working-class since USSR was communist welfare state.

In Europe, Germany had different goal: to build luxury vehicles, which are expensive and affordable only to the rich thus creating societal status and gap between classes.

There are reasons why modern Russia import foreign cars but not trucks and machinery, because while cars remain for reaching point B from A, trucks which are made for work are more important and thus cannot be relied on weaker foreign counterparts. Russian trucks and machinery are worldwide known for durability, strength and quality, crossing rivers, ice, snow, mountains and mud without a slight problem, delivering cargo where it is needed. After all, we all remember German vehicles stuck in the Russian mud 1942. And if 'German Engineering' fail in the North Asian enviroment, but Russian cope, that tells alot.

Trick is that Russian brands are not competitive in the World stage since Russia doesn't have need for it, and neither the will to fight for market with the West (Market Struggle made by Capitalism). West Europe and United States through TTIP, OECD, NATO and UN change governments and regimes on the planet, stopping their industries and then sell their products. Russia doesn't want colonies, but that's another story, but it is the reason for Russian lack of brands in the World.
